The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
