A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
