Grammy Milestone

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

However the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
