Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
